Earthy, thoughtful, funny” stories of love and despair, destiny and dumb luck, by the author of Last Exit to Brooklyn and Requiem for a Dream (Library Journal).

Hubert Selby Jr. made an indelible mark on contemporary American literature with Last Exit to Brooklyn, a controversial novel that explored life at the lowest strata of urban society. But even before that novel altered the landscape of American fiction, Selby was honing his literary craft with short fiction that cast the human condition in a stark light, stories “known for their harrowing portrayal of mere mortals chasing their delusions down the drain” (Salon.com).

The stories here represent Selby at his best, whether he’s exploring a married commuter’s fantasy about a stranger he sees every morning on the subway or wryly spinning the tale of a salesman whose life is dictated by Chinese fortune cookies. In these pages, a homeless man clings to his old army coat during a bitter lost weekend; and a young man’s successful attempt to impress a girl on their first date comes back to haunt him. In the intimate, sometimes shocking portraits collected in Song of the Silent Snow, Selby finds the delicate balance between joy and despair, revealing humanity in the darkest corners of existence.

“Selby’s writing never diminished; it always increased. His body of work is among the very highest of contemporary writers. He did not get the acknowledgment that he deserved, but he will.” —John Rechy, author of City of Night

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Hubert Selby Jr. including rare photos from the author’s estate.

Song of the Silent Snow Stories edition by Hubert Selby Literature Fiction eBooks

Recommended for fans of Charles Bukowski, John Fante, & Louis-Ferdinand Céline, and obviously those who liked the crushingly-depressing Requiem for a Dream.

With short story & poetry books I like to not only bracket the best passages [read on for one] & underline the most striking sentences, I also single, double, & triple-star the stories & poems in the table of contents -- the best of the book!

For this one it's:

1 star:
A Penny for Your Thoughts
Puberty

2 star:
The Coat [very sad]
Song of the Silent Snow [I recommend listening to some chillwave or ambient and epic music while reading the description of the walk]

3 star:
The Musician [this 11 pg story gets the closest I've seen to successfully and sincerely translating to text the feeling a musician gets when they are in that sweet spot with their instrument and the sounds they are producing] Here's my favorite passage:

"all those glorious dreams of music flowing from his soul through his hands as the poets voice read lyrics that invited him to find the melody to clothe them, and he breathed deeply as the experience of those memories was once more reawakened, not to be reimagined, as the images had long since been distilled and annihilated, but their memory was still there . . .the imagined joys were still there . . .the ecstasies were still there . . .hidden away in the warm folds of his brain where they could never be destroyed by any hand, and though the once brilliant images of concert halls and applause were now only flashes of light passing by his closed eyes, the experience, O, God, the tingle of the experience breathed itself eternally in his soul"

This doesn't mean these are the only good stories, but these were the standouts for me, my favorites. There are other good stories for those who appreciate bizarre and dark humor. I liked Selby best when he wrote otherwise boring scenes in the most beautiful way. Selby once said . . .

"Being an artist doesn't take much, just everything you've got. Which means, of course, that as the process is giving you life, it is also giving you death. But it's no big deal. They are one and the same and cannot be avoided or denied. So when I totally embrace this process, this life/death, and abandon myself to it, I transcend all this gibberish and hang out with the gods. It seems to me that that is worth the price of admission."

At his best it is clear to see he truly gave his all to his writing. This dude's dead as Bukowski but his writing is alive as anything, and I look forward to meeting more of him through his work. Wish list, prepare to be swamped with Selby! : )

Song of the Silent Snow Stories edition by Hubert Selby Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The Coat, Of Whales and Dreams, and Song of the Silent Snows.... perfection. All the stories in this collection are incredible writing. I cannot wait to read everything this man has written.
Excellent collection of short stories. And a great introduction to the work of Hubert Selby Jr..
I bought this because I tried to read Requiem for a Dream earlier, but I couldnt understand it. (Selby doesnt use quotation marks, or new paragraphs for dialogue.) I bought this to get used to his writing so I could understand Requiem. The stories areinteresting. Not one happy one so far, but thats Selby for ya. I like the book, almost halfway through. I started Requiem, and can understand it more, and am a few chapters in. Would recommend the book for anyone who's a fan of Selby, wants to get used to his writing style, or for someone who wants to read a book like no other.
This is the first book of Hubert Selby Jr.'s that I have read and I must say, it definately will not be the last. Stories like "Of Whales and Dreams" are beyond captivating--riddled with intricate details and powerful messages. Put quite simply, this book is a must read for anyone who finds value in innovative and experimental forms of writing.
Some of the stories will make you laugh, some will make you want to cry. All main characters are called Harry. All have different lives, different stories, but something underneath is the same. What is the common thread of the different Harrys? Read the book.
This is 13 short stories as aposed to his other novels, granted, but is also the easiest book of Selby jr to read. A great place to start with this wonderful and truely original American author.
every hubert selby jnr. book is an enjoyable read, and still completely different from what every one else is doing. he is compassionate and yet brutal in his prose. this is a collection of short stories, and as with all short story collections it is a mixed bag at times. the best here are the coat, about an alcoholic tramps love for his coat, so much so that he's willing to die to die for it and the title story seemingly a story of a depressed mans near death experience in the snow and his sudden realisation that he loves his life. read this book, it's easy to read but there are underlying meanings that some will and some won't quite understand.i'm not sure if i did but i thoroughly enjoyed guessing and will continue to.
I feel the need to have this book with me at all times. If you are the kind of person who is up untill 300 in the morning thinking about all the people who waste your time [and rob you of your sleep] this is a book for you. Every aspect of humanity can be found in the pages of these short stories. You will be a better person for reading Hubert Selby Jr.'s masterpiece.
